Open the Final Evidence

For viewers who have finished the film and want to compare notes. Each explanation is sealed in its own panel. Open only the cases you have closed.

How this page works

Everything above the dashed line is safe. Below it, each film has one closed panel labelled with its title and year. Opening a panel reveals the ending in full — culprit, mechanism, final image — without hedging. Panels do not open automatically, and opening one never opens another.

We explain endings for a simple reason: good mysteries and thrillers deserve a second conversation. Once the surprise is spent, what remains is craft. How were the clues placed? Why did the film choose that final shot? Was it fair? Those questions are only worth asking after the credits, and only with your consent.

Before you open anything: check the title and year on the panel. Several films share names with remakes and adaptations, and our explanations refer only to the version listed.

What to look for on a rewatch

After reading an explanation, many viewers return to the film. Watch the first twenty minutes again: most well-made mysteries place their decisive information early, when your attention is still settling. Pay attention to blocking — where characters stand and who leaves the frame — and to lines of dialogue delivered casually that turn out to carry weight.

U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels does not exist. He is Andrew Laeddis, a patient at Ashecliffe who killed his wife Dolores after she drowned their three children. The whole investigation is an elaborate role-play staged by Dr. Cawley as a last attempt to bring him back to reality before lobotomy. Andrew briefly accepts the truth, then appears to relapse. His final line — asking whether it would be worse to live as a monster or die as a good man — suggests he is choosing the procedure knowingly.

In the final (chronologically earliest) scenes, Teddy tells Leonard that he already killed the real John G. long ago and forgot, and that Teddy has been using him to kill others since. He also suggests that the story of Sammy Jankis may be Leonard's own — that Leonard's wife survived the attack and died from insulin he administered. Leonard, choosing a purpose over the truth, writes Teddy's licence plate as a fact to follow, ensuring he will hunt and kill Teddy — the murder we see at the film's start.

There is no conclusive solution — the case remains officially unsolved. The film strongly points toward Arthur Leigh Allen. In its final scene, survivor Mike Mageau identifies Allen from a photo line-up. Closing title cards explain that Allen died in 1992 before he could be charged, and that later DNA tests did not match him, leaving the identification disputed.
